Ever tripped over your kids' bikes in the garage? Ever worry about scratching the paint on your car when you pull in to the garage with inches to spare? Ever wished for an inexpensive gear storage solution?

Well, this is one approach I've taken. I sized this rack to fit neatly in between the bays of my garage, or it might fit on one side, too. Although it's tall, the base is heavy and large enough that I've never had any problems with tipping.

I sized the top racks to hold camp chairs on one side and skate-boards on the other, but you could easily customize this to fit your needs.

Thanks to "Steve" for filming, using his Kodak Zi-8!

  • Hey, I don't know about anyone else, but I would be willing to pay a buck or two for the plans to build one just like it. Great vid keep them coming.

  • @havefunletsauction Thanks man, I'm not sure where my shop notes are, but the 24" footprint sets some parameters (like for the width of the upper storage area). You can make it as tall as you want, as long as the top part clears the handle bars.

  • Very clever system, I like it! I do have a question for you, how do you store the bicycles long term, for example over winter? Do you hang them up in your garage or shed so that their tires do not get flat spots? Thank you for your video sharing this system.

  • @watrocket I wanted to hang 'em up over the winter, but didn't have wall or ceiling space for 4 bikes, lol. So I hung one on the wall and put the rest in the bike rack. Never really caused any problem. Thanks for the comment!

  • Thanks for the comments guys, if anybody makes their own, post a vid, would be great to see your mods! I adapted the base from some online plans, but cut the size way down to fit in the garage, and then I designed the top racks.

  • Doh! I accidentally uploaded a 480 version first. Sorry guys. My son, Steve, said he recorded in 1080, so I'm not sure why this is 720. Maybe it's an iMovie or YouTube issue?

  • Great ideas! Thanks!

  • This is a great idea and a nice design. I'm impressed. I need to design something for my computer room. Thanks. for the motivation.

  • I like it...a great way to organize and save space. Nice job.

  • Good idea Doc, a well thought-out storage unit. Seems we always have more

"verticle room" and few ways to use it.

  • Clever idea, just finished putting some shelves in my garage for organizing. The wind drowned you out at a few points though.

  • DrZ, what a great idea. This is right up my ally. I hate a messy garage. Although I don't think my will turn out as nice looking as yours.

  • niceness

  • great video next time it would be better if you didn't have the banjo playing in the background.
