Many are unaware of it, but aliens are already making their way into our own backyard. They come in droves, sometimes through the air, at times landing on our fields, and other times, invading our waters. Without natural predators, they multiply quickly. They are what scientists call invasive species—foreign plants and animals that have somehow made their way into the country. In some cases, the consequences of these invasions may be disastrous. The aliens are driving out some of our native species from their natural habitat.
Janitor fish, once believed to be capable of cleaning river systems, have now occupied much of the habitats in which they were released. And did you know that the giant snail or "kuhol" is one of the world's "100 Worst Invasive Alien Species"? A study also shows that a foreign species of catfish -- the Thai catfish -- is already dominating the habitat where our own local "hito" grows.
But there are those who say, we need not fear these aliens. With the right response, they can be beneficial too. Did you know for example that the tilapia, a favorite in Filipino markets, is actually not Pinoy but African?
