Bharat Ratna MS Subbulakshmi
____ My BLOG content for your reference______

Bharata Ratna MS Subbulakshmi:

MS Subbulakshmi popularly known as M.S.

M means Madurai the place she was born

S means Shanmukhavadivu her mothers name

She proudly says without her mother's encouragement she would not have become a singer and says she was her first guru.

Now read on

MS ( September 16 , 1916 - December 11 , 2004 ) was a renowned Carnatic vocalist . She was the first musician ever to be awarded the Bharat Ratna , India's highest civilian honor.

An Excerpt from her speech, Just you can imagine what a simple person she is:

Our home was very small -- two rooms, a kitchen and a courtyard. A staircase went up to the terrace on top. Our house was always packed with elderly aunts and uncles who were often sick. We had to be quieter then. Our life was simple and frugal. We had coriander coffee in the morning .We had rice and buttermilk at night. I was very fond of jasmines. But we couldn't afford to buy flowers everyday.

Do you know what is her Lollypop??

And candy? Vadiva and I would pound tamarind, chillies and salt together, roll it into little balls and put a stick through each one. There was our lollipop! I never felt we lacked things. Learning music was fun because we three children learnt and practised together. I would sing, Vadiva would play the veena and brother Saktivel would make the room echo with his mridangam. His drumming was so good that I actually learnt to play the mridangam from him. We would laugh and talk as we practised. But mother's footsteps were enough to make us fall silent.

What her father used to say?

"As a child, I had a pet name. Everyone called me Kunjamma, which meant little girl. But my father had another special name for me. It was always "Rajaathi, my little princess!" He was very proud of my singing. He would say that he would get me married only to someone who would cherish my music. Then he would laugh and tease, "So how about a nice boy who plays the tambura? Do you fancy such a husband?"

I like her personality so much:

Friends I am not writing much about her, there is heaps of information on this great personality in the web, please read about her. I got highest regard to MS as she was so simple, she can live like queen but she donated all her wealth for needy and when she passed away she was very simple person. She can have children but she didn't as she looked after her husbands first wife children as her children. We rarely come across people like MS. I always feel bad as I thought of going and seeing this great personality in 2004 when I lived for 2 months in Madras, but I postponed. So it is always best to do things immediately when you decide to do or else we cant do some things in our life time.

  • God sends certain people on earth to sing for us and certain people to be musicians for us. These are sent to earth so we can more easily stand the difficulties of life on earth. They bring heavenly tones and notes to help us develop our spiritual Self. Thank you, Mother India, for producing so many of these blessed musicians and singers. Karen Devaki

  • I bought a tape at a Sikh store in Vancouver, B.C. about 25 years ago and it had Vishnu Sahasranam by MS Subulakshmi on it. It is the most entrancing sound i've ever heard. Thank you Jbalaji ! Hare Krsna

  • Balaji sir,You did a wonderful job.Keep it up.The more we talk about MS amma,it works like a wonderful medicine. It cleans the mind and soul, takes us to a better path.Actually its like singing god's name continuously,we automatically will become better persons,no doubt at all.And yes after living in a palatial mansion, she lived and passed away like a simple person,God also has a way of setting saints aside from others. No saint passed away rich,Its a hallmark of sainthood.
