Gian Carlo Menotti - A Composer's Life in Two Worlds. Menotti was America's favorite operatic composer. The creator of the popular "Amahl and the Night Visitors" which is widely performed at Christmastime all across the world, Menotti was the winner of two Pulitzer prizes. Today he is virtually forgotten.

Documentary director Jay Fedigan interviewed Menotti in Spoleto, Italy during the Spoleto Festival. Menotti shares stories about the beginnings of the Festival and about "Amahl and the Night Visitors". His birthday celebration makes a great finale for the video.

Menotti recently passed away so I hope you enjoy this look into his life.

  • Thanks for uploading this as a fitting tribute to a great man! I know that he is now with the Angels in Heaven! Blessings and Peace to all!;D

  • I agree. I did "The Consul" last summer and since then I can still say it's my favorite opera. The music is stunning.

  • I saw "The Consul" yesterday.

I just think he's so unappreciated. His operas are so beautiful and moving.

  • How moved I am to see the Maestro. I had the amazing priviledge to help him in Scotland, at his beautiful home, at Yester. little did I realise then how great a man he was and remains. His work is astounding. I shall never forget the time, he performed in his private studio at Yester, a work he was composing. Very rarely in ones life does one come so close to genius. • Thank you so much for this wonderful video. Amahl is such a cherished part of my Holiday and I can't thank you enough for posting this video! I pray that soon someone will begin rebroadcasting this at Christmastime!!

  • Menotti appears very briefly in the video "The Maestro" (refering to Arturo Toscanini"). It was in a gathering of friends at the "Isolino San Giovanni" in Italy (1930s). Menotti appears "gentle and shy" much like Robert Shaw in 1948 during credits after the performance of Beethoven Symphony #9 from NBC Studio 8H in New York.
