The cables are just as important as every other component, although I must admit it can become ridiculous at times. But after trying lamp cord on a budget receiver many years ago and hearing how horribly it destroyed the sound, I've stopped doubting the importance of choosing the right cables for the job.
And the equipment is fun too! :)
BTW, unless you use a hyper-resolution format, much of the digital stuff out there simply doesn't have all of the nuances of the original sound recording.
You'd be surprised at the difference you can hear by changing just a single component. The question is how much you're willing to spend to achieve the level of realism you desire.
Also, vinyl is a really nice format when done properly. It's possibly the only totally analog media format that can achieve near perfection with minimal (but very expensive) gear.

It pains me to say this... but as a subscriber to Stereophile for the last 20 years, I have to say that John Atkinson is a fucking asshole.

One more thing. Did you watch the second part of the Salon Son & Image 2009 video? There's an interesting gadget presented at the end of it. ;)

Actually, it's both. They're seeking a sound quality that's as close as having the band in front of them.
