  • Not bad for a high school ensemble. This song is an intonation nightmare, and for a high school ensemble ya'll handled it okay. More dynamic quality would have been good, but if some of you continue to play past high school it'll come.

  • It would have been better if our wind ensemble would have played it but unfortunately we were all one band last year.

  • You know what? People need to not whisper when we perform

    :)

I forgot we did this good :)

  • Yeah, I know who was whispering but I would rather not say on here. lol

  • Haha, oh ok.

Didn't mean to sound rude about it haha.

  • No, you didn't! I just don't want to say any names in case they get on here. lol

  • I was in this ensemble. The college band I am in played this piece last week and I am still mad at my professor for not conducting it the way Westbrook did. Looking back, this was one of my proudest musical accomplishments.

  • I am a retired band director, and played this piece as a high school musician. It can be a intonation nightmare!! It takes great breath control and diaphram support, especially in the woodwinds. The harmonies in Wagner are very close, which make it difficult to play WELL. But, therein lies the beauty of this piece when it is played well. I have heard college ensembles do worse. A great performance!!

  • Bravo!! Oboegirl, you and your bandmates can be proud of your performance. Believe it or not, I played this magnificent piece in my high school band 50 years ago! It was my introduction to Wagner's sublime genius.

  • I felt that the director was out of character when conducting. He moved the stick with too much bounce, so he came across as conducting very stiffly and sharply. When looking at his pattern I wanted to play staccato at some points. And he also needlessly beat time when he should have conducted the music. There is no reason to conduct a whole note in time like the brass crescendo before dolce in the woodwinds. (around #3). The band's performance was great; I agree that it was the best on youtube

  • this is beautiful! my high school band is playing this, but my director wants it much faster. this is incredible though, your chops must have been wasted after this.

  • Really, though, it wasn't a bad performance. It was the best recording of this song I could find on YouTube, so be proud! Ya'll have a group of amazingly talented musicians for a high school group, even better than some colleges.

  • Hahaha, ok good

    :)
