Technically right, it's hinted that there might be a cold war of sorts in the ten months before the radiation from the doomsday device kills everyone ("we must not allow a mineshaft gap!") but I'd like to know what people think happened a century later when the radiation levels died down to safe levels.

You're right. But I think the mindset you're talking about has a lot to do with a lack of concern for the world around us, and an avoidance of real responsibilities. The kinds of responsibilities that politicians choose to ignore.
