Steve Prefontaine was born January 25, 1951. he grew up in Coos Bay, Oregon. Steve Prefontaine started running at Marshfield High School and was undefeated in cross country and track his junior and senior year. Prefontaine ran cross country and track and won an impressive seven NCAA national titles. he later went on on was 4th at 1972 Olympic Games. Steve Prefontaine died on May 30, 1975 at the age of 24 driving home from a track meet where he had just set the American record in the 5000 meter race. He will always be known for his toughness on the track.I have a poster that will remind us of his toughness. www.justrunners.com
