Toward A More Perfect Union: Managing Crime in East Baton Rouge Parish
"We are all familiar with the current statistics on the plight of the African American youth and his family. But perhaps we are not all familiar with how to teach life skills that empower the young African American male to become emotionally well and self- sufficient".
"The best weapon for fighting disproportionate African American youth violence and crime is teaching pro-social core values and wealth creating behaviors."
"It takes a village to raise a child and future leader. However, if the damn village support institutions are not correct the children will be crazy!"
Those institutions include religion, family, education, law enforcement, government, private enterprise and the media and the martial arts school. When these institutions unite, they provide reinforcement for pro-social behaviors and become truly authoritative communities where rules are applied consistently.
Unity Day Youth and Family Zone's second installment to the joint East Baton Rouge Parish Metro-City Councils'-- Call To Action: Town Hall Meeting On Crime Prevention is—Fun Fitness and Family Values.
On October 29, 2010, 6:00 PM-8 PM at the YMCA 350 Foster Street, Baton Rouge LA, the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office, Special Community Anti Crime Team, which reports to Sheriff Sid Gautreaux, will begin training Karate with and sharing pro-social messages to youth from East Baton Rouge Parish. We call this Fun Fitness and Family Values and it is not a one time event. The Sheriff's Office has committed to having its team members repeat this process to build relationships with Unity Day Youth and Family Zone participants.
We believe that the best weapon for fighting disproportionate youth violence and crime is teaching pro-social core values and wealth creating behaviors." Law enforcement plays a critical role in crime prevention for two reasons. First, law enforcement: will build relationships and trust with youth and families thru activities like Unity Day Youth and Family Zone provides; and second, will leverage those relationships and trust to gather crime information.
