Because it's a very inexpensive way to get a cabinet, chassis, and transformers. You can't even buy a head or combo cab for the price of a new VJ. So it's a great launch-pad for amp projects. Start pricing a "ground up" amp project and you'll see what I mean. :)

why do people bother with "gutting" a valve jr? why not just build an amp from ground up and call it something else? lol

This guy builds great amps...I have the Phaez 50. Its a smokin' head! If you have the coin, buy an amp from him, it's well worth the ching...all hand wired, point to point...

I see that these use 2x12AX7's and 2xEL84's, but what about the rectifier? Would you be able to build one with a tube rectifier instead of solid-state, and what would the price be?

could you post a video on how to put a slave output into a epiphone valve jr head

That is aint talkin bout love/Van Halen. Randy built an amp for me too. Like the others that own his amps. They absolutely rock. Flat out rock. BUY IT!!!

Nice! Sounds great. What's the tune at 0:47 ?? It's driving me crazy trying to remember. :-)
very cool video, and sweet amp. Thanks for sharing. So, is this a drop-in amp you built, sell, or bought? I'd love some more info. I'm thinking of gutting one of my VJ's and making it a tiny terror.

This is my design and I do sell them. The cost is around $300 with chassis trade-in about $350 without trade-in. I don't have clips of my Tiny Terror version yet though.
