The one at 1:49 is similar kind of to a wrestling Fujiwara armbar.

if i may, for example when you do a twisting wrist lock into a throw, the wrist lock should put him on his toes, and he should be in pain throughout the entire transition through the throw i believe is what they are saying. meaning you have to unbalance him BEFORE you throw him.

Balance and center of gravity control are used in hapkido for throwing techniques not locking techniques (though in combat they're combined). You say you do hapkido yet you seem unaware of the mechanics of pain compliance, given how early in the system that is taught I'm left somewhat skeptical of your participation. Which particular denomination of hapkido are you studying? It's wrong to compare hapkido to arts like judo the moves look the same but are based on very different principals.

We obviously operate under different schools of thought. Most of the techniques shown here are using leverage against the joints to put the person on the ground.
Maybe you could point out one technique that should be done differently and possibly show me a video of someone doing it the way you think it should be done.
I am intrigued by the discussion not offended.

I am a practitioner of Hapkido. Whilst I realise that the techniques should hurt (or how else would you learn them?), surely the guy should be going onto his toes when he's locked in certain places. How can the chap be thrown when he's not unbalanced?? The only time I see the opponent on his toes is the very last technique, a wrist lock technique into 'come along'.

Are you guys just commentors who watch Video's of Hapkido techniques or actual practitioners? As a student I know from experience that most of these are compliance techniques that work because they freaking hurt. This isn't a Hapkido dance video that you might find elsewhere on the Net this is an overview of white belt jointlock techniques. Troll elsewhere please :P
i signd up for a hapkido class telling the
ownr/instructr i had an arthritic rt hip & couldnt use kicks for s/d
i desired to learn s/d joint locks & takedowns (falls/rolls) - this stuff
3 classes completed & none of it
only kicks&punches (turned out to be a combo tkd/hapkido class evidently)
i think the man was/is disingenuous and have forfeited a non-returnable fee
live & learn i guess
20/20 hindsight shoulda just sent the $ to you - ive learned much more here

Thanks for the comment! That's too bad about the situation though.
It's difficult but I try to keep my class as balanced as possible between striking/kicking and grappling; the way I think Hapkido should be. While I feel that I am good at striking and kicking my passion lies more in the grappling.
Just for future reference I gladly accept donations :)

Hey Josh if it's not too much trouble can you redo this video with closer magnification?
thanks for considering.

I'd love to but I just haven't found the time to make a full in depth video. The purpose of this was to help my students remember the techniques. Check out my technique of the month series if you haven't yet. Thanks for the kudos.
