Sir,

With all respect to you and your service, when was the last time Canada was in a shooting war for any period of time? Korea? That being so, I don't think you nor I have any right to comment on these men's state of mind at the time. Being in constant contact with an ununiformed enemy in a wholly hostile area, having friends killed and mutilated, screws with your head. Some men react better than others, but one thing is certain, put men in that situation, and some will kill unlawfully.

Um, your argument would justify Hitler's SS death camps. After all "The point is to kill your enemy", right? "Rules of War don't apply", heh?

They were shot because there was too much of it going on and there was a clear case against them . The Boers generally fought a clean and honourable fight - the British however fought with utter ruthlessness and determination this being the only way they could win. The Australian view that shooting prisoners was at best justified or at worst just excusable high spirits is clearly bollocks . Breaker Morant by the way was not Australian he was as English as something very English

"The Boers generally fought a clean and honourable fight...." Anglophobic rubbish. The very reason the real Harry Morant went off the deep end was the fact that Captain Hunt, who was left alive but wounded, with the Boers after the Duiwelskloof raid, turned up dead and mutilated. The facts are that the guerrilla phase of the Boer War was brutal, with atrocities committed on both sides. The Boers often wore captured British khaki as a ruse - a violation of accepted war conduct then and now.

Haven't seen the movie in a while - but were the Boers they executed wearing any sort of uniform or identifiable badge of allegiance? If not, the British had every right under the laws of war to execute them without trial. That's why the French Resistance in WW2 wore armbands.

interesting opinions on here about the real men involved'' i would suggest reading the books on breaker morant and the boer war before leaving unreasearched waffle. they were real men fighting a dirty war' which was only won by the crown forces after they adopted the fighting style of the commando's, this included shooting of innocents and burning and destruction of property. both sides fought a harsh war and most fighters were brave men 'boer or colonial forces. a excellent movie.

Even war has ethical and legal rules. The only possible mitigating reason for their murder of civilians and one of their own men was post traumatic stress. Though that is unlikely in this case. No sane person who has been to war glorifies it or thinks they are a hero. My father was a fighter pilot in WW2 for 4 years, my father in law was torpedoed twice as a naval officer in WW2, including D Day. They were very brave, but neither would ever march in the streets after, or wear their medals.
