Dead Man's Rope

A million footsteps, this left foot drags behind my right
But I keep walking, from daybreak Ã,?'til the falling night
And as days turn into weeks and years
And years turn into lifetimes
I just keep walking, like I've been walking for a thousand years

Walk away in emptiness, walk away in sorrow,
Walk away from yesterday, walk away tomorrow,

If you're walking to escape, to escape from your affliction
You'd be walking in a great circle, a circle of addiction
Did you ever wonder what you'd been carrying since the world was black?
You see yourself in a looking glass with a tombstone on your back

Walk away in emptiness, walk away in sorrow,
Walk away from yesterday, walk away tomorrow,
Walk away in anger, walk away in pain
Walk away from life itself, walk into the rain

All this wandering has led me to this place
Inside the well of my memory, sweet rain of forgiveness
I'm just hanging here in space

Now I'm suspended between my darkest fears and dearest hope
Yes I've been walking, now I'm hanging from a dead man's rope
With Hell below me, and Heaven in the sky above
I've been walking, I've been walking away from Jesus' love

Walk away in emptiness, walk away in sorrow,
Walk away from yesterday, walk away tomorrow,
Walk away in anger, walk away in pain
Walk away from life itself, walk into the rain

All this wandering has led me to this place
Inside the well of my memory, sweet rain of forgiveness
I'm just hanging here in space

The shadows fall
Around my bed
When the hand of an angel,
The hand of an angel is reaching down above my head

All this wandering has led me to this place
Inside the well of my memory, sweet rain of forgiveness
Now I'm walking in his grace
I'm walking in his footsteps
Walking in his footsteps,
Walking in his footsteps

All the days of my life I will walk with you
All the days of my life I will talk with you
All the days of my life I will share with you
All the days of my life I will bear with you

Walk away from emptiness, walk away from sorrow,
Walk away from yesterday, walk away tomorrow,
Walk away from anger, walk away from pain
Walk away from anguish, walk into the rain

  • Wow, I'm so glad other people know how great an acheivement this song really is.

  • This song to me is about having loved and lost....very dearly. Having wronged some rights...and gotten too far away from home. Suffered desolation, acute isolation, falling and rising up great heights but still not knowing why it got so lonely at the top, at the bottom, with your love or without anyone....feeling marooned on an island feeling like you're about to breathe your last. This song symbolizes the longing that drives us to achieve a bliss which never really occurs.

  • Two components of human struggle: addiction (chemical, emotional, etc) and forgiveness (the letting go of addiction).are beautifully depicted here -My favorite Sting song.

  • 近年のstingの曲のなかでは最高の曲

  • Thanks Sting for such a beautiful song, it gives me goosebumps towards the end when redemptions come to a wayard soul.

  • this song is coolness to the soul.

  • Healing starts with forgiveness. I love how Sting describes the hopelessness and emptiness of an addicts life, and ascends to the solution...A spiritual solution. As a recovering addict myself, I'll never forget hearing this for the first time live. Beautiful. There is a way out... One Love

  • Sting was raised as a Roman Catholic, but he has declared he is agnostic (check out _Broken Music_, his autobiography). Though he does not subscribe to any particular creed, the concept of faith, spirituality, and religions in general fascinate him, and he has a great amount of respect for religious beliefs. His latest album, _If on a Winter's Night_, contains mostly Christian Christmas hymns. This song is beautiful and further proof of his open-mindedness and acceptance.
