There is a Midwest fruit as sweet as bananas, as fragrant as papayas, and it can be gathered from wild trees: the pawpaw.
The pawpaw tree seldom grows taller than 20 to 30 feet.
It is usually found in groves beneath larger trees, in rich, moist soil, on steep slopes, and in creek and river bottoms.
The fruits can be six inches long and nearly three inches in diameter.
They are thin-skinned and have an abundance of large seeds and soft, fragrant, yellow meat.

The paw paw is also common in the south - including Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Ah, and what may not be common knowledge is that the paw paw trees have about 30 chemicals in their twigs (and leaves) but more concentrated in the twigs that fight cancer better then any chemotherapy drug in existence. Seriously, Just YouTube Dr. McGlaughlin of Purdue University and look at his lectures, he's a biochemist who's studied Cancer for 30 years and has vast research on Paw Paw and Cancer.

I saw so many of these along the Merimec River in Missouri this summer. Wish we had em here in the mountains of New York State.
