Saying that special effects are a placeholder is an unbelievably snobbish thing to say. Movies are visual art and when special effects are done really well (like LOTR or Avatar) they are a very important part of the atmosphere of the movie. Of course too much tasteless special effects (as in 2012) are not good, however you can never say that special effects are just placeholders, it's stupid.

You know what? I enjoyed 2012. Why? I watched it for FUN! I knew it would be crazy and stupid but it was enjoyable! Suspension of disbelief folks!

@BrokenPuzzle lol do you watch Supernatural? I loved in the future episode where the world was really fucked up (I think it was 2015 though) and there's a newspaper with a headline that says something about "President Palin".
