The wine industry, like many others, has been hit by global economic woes. On top of that, wine writers in the UK and the US have been sniping at Australia's exports, and then there's the threat of a continuing wine glut and the spectre of climate change affecting rainfall patterns.

These are just some of the conditions long-time wine writer James Halliday considered when he put together the latest 2010 edition of the 'Australian Wine Companion'. He's picked the eyes out of a tough 2009 vintage, given us his selections and predictions for the year ahead.

Along with the 'Companion', Halliday has also released a new reference book for wine lovers, 'The Australian Wine Encyclopedia'.
