Dr. Kimberly Blaeser, a Native American poet and professor of creative writing at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, visited the Kingdom of Bahrain October 4-7, 2010. Dr. Blaeser engaged audiences of young writers, students, and members of the local arts community, reciting her work at the University of Bahrain, Royal University for Women, the American Corner, the House of Poetry and the Bahrain Writers' Association. In addition to reading selections from her three compilations of poetry, she discussed Native American history, literature and tradition, drawing from her own experiences growing up as a member of the White Earth Reservation in northern Minnesota.
Dr. Blaeser also announced the winner of a youth poetry contest sponsored by the U.S. Embassy on the theme of Bahraini culture and heritage during an event hosted by the Bahrain Writers' Association. 15 year-old, Noor Salman, was named the winner for her poem "A Pearl Diver's Story," and received a laptop computer as her prize. Several young poets shared their submissions to the contest in an "open-mic" format at the event, and received signed copies of Dr. Blaeser's work.
