i used to play here as a child, some of my fondest memories were there. I just want to go there again one day, even if all of it was destroyed...

I remember going there many times when I was very young... even remember a time of fireworks every Friday or Saturday night, though we'd park across the water in Seaside Park to watch those. What amazes me is no footage of the park from its heydays has yet surfaced. We have family movies that include some footage from Savin Rock and Freedomland, even Storytown USA, Frontiertown USA The Land Of Make Believe and North Pole USA (All in upstate NY) from 1957, but no footage of Pleasure Beach.

anyone know why this place went to shit like this?

A fire burned down the bridge, restricting access for emergency vehicles. The residents didn't own the land their houses were on, so the town basically took it back and told them they had to abandon their property. A legal battle dragged on for years, during which the community was looted and destroyed. This is what's left.

Is this place still around? Or is it all gone now?

Still around, although it's been disappearing piece by piece. There have been several fires in the past year. Sadly, the remnants of the carousel (about 1:40 in) were recently torn down.
