Hundreds of Striking Janitors to Welcome First Wave of Union Janitors from Other Cities Committed to Participate in Acts of Civil Disobedience

Houston --- As nearly two thousand Houston janitors head into the fourth week of a public strike that is attracting growing national attention, hundreds of striking janitors will gather at the InterContinental Hotel in the Galleria area at 7PM tonight to welcome the first wave of union janitors from other cities who are planning to engage in non-violent acts of civil disobedience in Houston and could face arrest for their actions in the coming days. At least 50 SEIU janitors and union leaders from around the country will travel to Houston this week to call on national commercial landlords to put an end to the poverty conditions and poor treatment of the city's workers. These "Freedom Flyers" are continuing a time-honored tradition of non-violent protest against injustice inspired by the Freedom Riders of 1961 who rode throughout the southern United States protesting segregation.
