It takes place partially in the 80's and partially in the 30's. There was never a "lesbian sex scene" in the movie though the director Jon Avnet referred to the food fight scene as his movie's love scene.

to be honest, if I'd seen the trailer before I'd seen the movie I probably would've passed cause it just doesn't look like it'd be my style. luckily, I caught the movie first and am glad I did because I adore it and I watch it once at least every few months! definitely in my top 5 favorites ever :]

I actually had seen the trailer and REALLY DIDN'T want to see it. But my mom and her friend were going to the movies one day and I wanted to go with... they picked the movie and I fell in love with it.

There still is great actresses. In my opinion, Natalie Portman is very talented.

I typically watch movies with at least 10 good explosions but I love this movie. It is 1 of about 5 drama movies that I can watch. Any drama made today is pure crap. Jessica Tandy is one of the best actresses that has ever lived. I cannot think of one really good actress today.
