The great Italian tenor Beniamino Gigli (1890-1957) and Italian soprano Mafalda Favero (1903-1981) in the Balcony Scene from Act 2 of Gounod's Roméo et Juliette, coming from a live performance on 5 April 1934 at the Teatro alla Scala, Milan, conducted by Gabriele Santini.
The photo in the main part of the video features Gigli as a rather chubby Romeo and Favero as a lovely Juliette in this very scene in the La Scala production.
Gigli sang the role frequently during his stint at the New York Metropolitan Opera, but at La Scala he only sang it in one season between 21 March and 5 April 1934. The last performance of the run is documented here.
This is fascinating indeed. She is exquisite in every way and he...well, he's Gigli! I wish they had made studio recordings of this opera's FOUR love duets. For some reason, records of this music from Italian sources are rare. Great video.

Gigli and Favero, splendid singing from two of the greatest artists. A lost art. Listen to 1st Act La Traviata as well.

Achingly beautiful! Favero is such an underknown artist . . . Her voice is incredibly rich and beautifully placed.

Superb! What a duo they made! The vocal and stylistic blend is perfect. The famous Gigli mezza voce is especially attractive. In fact, he is as a rule better when he sings more lightly...even by '34, the more heavily supported sounds at the very top of the range could thicken the vibrato a bit in the direction of a bleat. Not all the way, to be sure, but the tendency was there, depending on how tired he was or wasn't.
