The counselors going through orientation this week have already been taught how to transfer to and from a wheelchair. This afternoon, they learned how to treat the camper while he or she is in the wheelchair. Taking care of the wheelchair itself was also discussed. Please visit campascca.org/journal -Camp ASCCA online.
WillAct2Eat, you're right ... and in other transfers we do practice in a variety of wheelchairs. Those take place with our volunteer campers in the cabins and at our recreation areas.
We do have staff and guest speakers that are in wheelchairs and they do teach these skills, too. Also - when campers arrive - a lot of learning takes place between campers, counselors and program staff. We learn from the campers all the time. That's one of the great things about camp.
This is just one video that shows this particular group. It is a small snapshot in time of all the various training sessions that take place.
