Crossing the Tibetan Plateu from Xining to Lhasa on the highest stretch of rail track in the world. Completed in 2006 the railway posed significant construction problems with 550km laid on permafrost and requiring 675 bridges. The railway can be seen as a way of linking occupied Tibet to the rest of China. Tickets are in short supply in the summer season and "additional fees" have to be paid to secure them. Tickets are made available to the public around two weeks in advance.
