After Jonah Sithole had left The Blacks Unlimited again in 1988, Thomas just gave up on trying to find another guitar player who could play mbira guitar as well as Jonah and he just put the mbira in there.

From Zimbabwian vinyl.

  • Aboubacar you know your history and expanding on your point, Thomas introduced the mbira because he realized he could only imitate the sound, but he could not replace it and back in the 70s people were not very receptive to mbira music as it had been labeled "yemashavi" so in transferring the mbira to the guitar they were trying to modernize the music viewed by many as undesirable. But the Mbira Guitar still remains in his music and each guitarist brings a different flair and style I love.

  • @testyourmightt1 Thomas put the mbira in (as early as on Mr. Music: Kufa Kwangu (superiorly played by Jonah in 1996, check my posting) and Tondobayana) because he could not find a mbira guitar player anywhere near as strong as Jonah Sithole.

I have this on tape as said by Thomas and by Jonah.

Any other reason came up after the fact.

And the one who started it all was also Jonah. So there was no "they" who transferred the mbira. It was Jonah.

And no other player can hold a candle to him.

  • I beg to differ with many of yu im sorry as far as i kno Jonah did not introduce mbira kwaMukanya he was playing lead guitar as mbira. The person who came with mbira was Chatwell Dutiro. I kno Thomas used mbira b4 on 2 songs Kufa kwangu and Tondobayana but Jonah was not even in the line up see Mr Africa Music Himself there was Joshua Thlomai and Manu Jira. The first album yakaitwa nembira was Chamunorwa, Chartwell was playing alone b4 Ngoni and Bezel Makombe joined.Kana ndatadza gadzirisai
