walrus - odobenus rosmarus

The Walrus is a large marine mammal which lives in the Arctic Ocean and sub-Arctic seas of the Northern Hemisphere.
The walrus searches and identifies prey with its sensitive whiskers and clears the murky bottoms with jets of water and active flipper movements.
The Walrus has an air sac under its throat which acts like a flotation bubble and allows the Walrus to bob vertically in the water and sleep.

De walrus is een robbensoort die in de koude zeeën van het noordelijke halfrond voorkomt. De naam "walrus" komt van het Scandinavische "val ross", wat "walvispaard" betekent. De borstelachtige snorharen gebruiken ze bij het zoeken naar dit voedsel in de modderige bodem. Bij walrussen in de dierentuin zijn deze vaak heel prominent aanwezig maar bij in het wild levende dieren zijn ze meestal grotendeels afgesleten door het dagelijkse gebruik. Walrussen hebben zeer beweeglijke flippers waardoor ze aan land redelijk beweeglijk zijn.
Walrussen zijn zelden verder dan 15 kilometer van de kust verwijderd.
