Thomas Jefferson and the Principles of '98. The second segment in the first series of ten lectures, presented at "The Truth About American History: An Austro-Jeffersonian Perspective" seminar, hosted by the Mises Institute. Recorded 06/20/2005. [1:27:22]. In this second segment, Prof. Woods continues with the history of the Alien and Sedition Acts. He explains why Jefferson chose to emphasize the 10th Amendment instead of the 1st in his arguments against the Constitutionality of the acts. Although Jefferson maintained that states COULD secede from the Union, he instead argued that state nullification of the unconstitutional acts was a better, more moderate remedy. In Jefferson's view, nullification was the middle way between unlimited submission to the federal government on the one hand and the drastic solution of secession on the other.
Thanks for watching! I will be launching a project I put on the back burner in a few months called "The Free Market Library".
