The problem is that the Egyptian people right now, according to the poles, tend to support fundamental Islam, view women as possessions, and are in favor of punishing adultery by stoning (for the women), rape by stoning (both the rapist and the raped), and theft by chopping off people's hands... I have a feeling it's going to end up like Iran again.

That being said, I understand that Mubarak has not done right by his people, but I am afraid of who will replace him.

@Jonstern1983 That is a genuine concern. And it's one of the downsides of democracy. Once it's in place we can't be certain or control what the will of those people will be. I guess they will have to work through it like we did. Our history in the US is full of bad decisions and poor choices. Unfair treatment of minorities and foreigners. We slowly outgrew a lot of it. I'm thinking we have to let them do the same.

@RadicalSyndicate Yeah it's funny cause for all the excuses some people have been making the situation over there gets worse and worse. And it also becomes clear just how corrupt Mubarak's regime is. Notice how there wasn't any violence until his so-called "supporters" came out there. Now their over there abusing journalists hurting their fellow citizens and all of that crap. Those 6 people are being willfully ignorant in my opinion. The US needs to stop backing these dictators.

@Jonstern1983 My understanding is that the majority oppose having an islamist government. The highest percentage I've seen is 40% (also seen polls with lower figures), and that is only on the strict condition that they are not anti-democratic. Where did you get the information from?

@rationalwarrior True, I just hope that they don't settle into a pre '79 mentality and try to invade Israel and give safe haven to terrorists who wish to destroy the west, or if they do, they outgrow it a lot more quickly than the US has outgrown it's own prejudices.
