This is a good modern version. The original is more true to the stiff upper lip spirit of the Neville Shute book (being made very soon after it was published).

This version reflects the social changes in the 50 years since the book was published.

Both are good, but in different ways.

While missing the value of the faults of human nature indicated by the first movie with a conflicted Gregory Peck and a feckless Ava Gardner (perfect for their time), I think this version is even more traumatic. Modern 21st century civilization just petering out. Not with a bang but with a gag. No glory. No moral. No logic. I find it extremely sad.

The version is Bullshit; Russkies would never allow the Chinese to get that far.

I disagree; the cinematography alone is superior; but Armand Assante is quite good.

I don't spend too much of my time worrying about these things. Life is too short for that. But I do think that raising awareness is usually a good thing. If that's true for cancer, it must be true for weapons that can destroy our whole civilization inside an hour.

Except for watching these videos I don't think about to much, as it does no good that I can see. In the end, no matter the means or time frame, we all die. I do worry for my children/grandchildren and the rest of the youth of the world, but my time is past. I did what I could when I was young, but the sad truth is the government always gets their way. I was only a kid out of high school when I got drafted. After seeing what I did, death never fazed me again. peace

Well, I'm actually surprised we're still here. I suggest the documentary "On the Brink: Doomsday". Seriously, you wouldn't believe how close we have come to a nuclear holocaust and for incredibly stupid reasons. There is control, but the persons responsible for the weapons are just human. (Except for the Dead Hand system, of course, which actually might be worse.)

I've read where we've ctually helped other nuclear powers upgrade their equipment to tell if it's real or not. Whether this is factual I don't know. My point is despite all the falts, including accidental N. War it's never happend. That's just to much of a coincidence for me which leaves only two avenues. There is control, or nuclear weapons don't exist, except in tests where witnesses to the test's wear blindfolds. Curious the only times they were used were on cities made of wood.

My towns civil defense sirens just blared out a test. What an eerie sound after watching this movie.

Yes, we are. But there have been other close-calls with nuclear weapons. For example on January 25, 1995, when the Russian systems interpreted the launch of a Norwegian scientific research rocket as an American first-strike SLBM. The Russian "nuclear football" was activated by President Boris Yeltsin (that drunk) and might've been used.

What I'm saying is that there shouldn't even be a possibility that WMDs would be used accidentally, but regrettably that's not the case.
