Franco Corelli: Niun mi tema (1981)

Franco Corelli as Verdi's Otello (Corelli's last concert 9th July 1981).
Despite of bad quality of the record Corelli presents how great Otello could be.
In the death scene he acts with his voice, he as Otello knows, that he has lost his honour, wife, all his life...
In my opinion no one tenor can match it all so perfect.

S'anco armato mi vede. Ecco la fine
Del mio camin. . .Oh! Gloria! Otello fu.
(Lascia cadere la spada. Va presso il letto e contempla Desdemona.)
E tu. . .come sei pallida! e stanca, e muta, e bella,
Pia creatura nata sotto maligna stella.
Fredda come la casta tua vita, e in cielo assorta.
Desdemona! Desdemona! . . . Ah ... morta! ... morta! ... morta! ...
(estraendo furtivamente dalle vesti un pugnale)
Ho un'arma ancor!
(Si ferisce.)
Pria d'ucciderti. . .sposa. . .ti baciai.
Or morendo. . .nell'ombra. . . ov'io mi giacio. . .
Un bacio. . .un bacio ancora. . . un altro bacio. . .
(Muore.)

OTHELLO
Let no one fear me
Even seeing me armed. This is the end

Othello is dead.
(He drops the sword, goes to the bed,
and contemplates Desdemona.)
And you . . . how pale you are! and
weary, and silent, and beautiful,
Sainted creature born under a malign

Cold as your chaste life, and borne up to heaven.
Desdemona! Desdemona! . . . Ah . . .
dead! ... dead! ... dead! ...
(furtively drawing a dagger from his
garment)
I still have a weapon!
(woumds himself)
Before killing you . . . wife . . . I kissed you.
Now, dying . . . in the darkness ... where I lie . . .
A kiss ... a kiss again ... another kiss ...
(He dies.)

In the book of Marina Boagno, Franco Corelli, Un uomo, una voce (a man, a voice) said that that day, April 9th, 1981, At Newark Simphony Hall (New Jersey) Franco gave his last glorious concert. He sang arias: Ch'ella mi creda, O souverain, Niun mi tema; and songs: Serenata, L'ultima canzone, Sogno (Tosti), Pecche, Occhi di fata, E canta il grillo, a la Barcillunisa, mamma mia che vo sape and Core 'ngrato. The voice of Franco here was almost intact, at 60, singing the most arduous repertory!!!!

Strange that he sounds better here than he did 10 years earlier. Still nowhere near as phenomenal as he was in the 1950s though.

MAGNIFCO EL GRAN MAESTRO FRANCO CORELLI. Si hubiese interpretado, en los escenarios, la opera completa, habría sido un UN SUBLIME E IMPONENTE "OTELLO"; EL ÚNICO A LA ALTURA DEL "OTELLO" DEL GRAN RAMÓN VINAY; EL MEJOR EN LA HISTORIA DE LA OPERA; Mucho después vienen los otros que se pretenden que son muy buenos; nada de eso. Tenemos conocimiento de que la grabó completa pero él dejó para más adelante entregarla al público,después de revisarla; núnca lo realizó.
