Robber Fly

While laying on the pine needles waiting for the doves to land I spotted this frightening creature! Was it waiting for the doves as well! Learned it was a robber fly and it loves to attack flying insects such as dragon and damsel flies, grasshoppers, bees, etc... Check out those powerful legs which is what helps them hold down their prey. They inject venom much like spiders. I was quite frightened by this one hence the scary music from ccmixter .Titled 'the scream'. http://ccmixter.org/files/thanvannispen/8650. Also noticed the robber flies have beards!! Some longer and more pronounced then others.

These are actually pretty beneficial insects as they prey on other flies and such...I have a horse and certainly don't mind them around the barn!

They also won't bite you unless you pick them up or make them feel trapped- they're not blood feeders like horseflies.

these guys dont bite they may land on you to use you as a perch to hunt other flies

in elementary school i saw one of these guys it was chilling

i was releasing some grasshoppers in the whiler and this basterd fly like a fucking rocket and stole a grasshopper

When I used to live in Florida, these things would fly at my head as fast as they could! They use to get in my house... they really creeped me out. They are EVIL.
