This is Eric's Harrier version mk3. He has been working at this for many years since beginning the duct-work for the Mk1 version in the fall of 1989. The model in the video is powered by a Rossi 1.05 ducted fan engine. The stability is augmented by three gyros for pitch, yaw and roll. At the beginning are a few short hops as adjustments are being made. The mixture can be changed from the transmitter. Finally, Eric takes off and does one circuit around the field. You will see Eric reach down for some blades of grass which he throws into the air to decide which way the breeze is blowing. Note that beyond the orange fence in the background is a 40-foot deep pit from which the owner of the property has been hauling away many truckloads of sand. About halfway through the flight, the glow element in the motor failed, resulting in a reduction of power. Only the glow of the remaining bits of the element allowed the engine to continue to run. After completing one circuit, as soon as the trottle was backed off slightly, the engine stopped running. The engine is running with very high compression. In a previous flight a few days earlier, the engine actually spat out the glow plug, stripping the threads in the clyinder head. Eric says that his biggest problem has always been needing more power. This model was not painted in order to save weight. In fact, even the on-off switch was omitted to save weight. The gear is fixed (not retractable). The battery is simply plugged into the receiver. Several days before this video was recorded, Eric had a good flight which included some long hovers. Too bad I missed that one!

  • Also awesome video!! I could have swore I seen this Harrier in a magazine years ago. Incredible accomplishment there. 5 stars!

  • Its a Rossi 1.05 DF engine. DF engines dont turn normal rpm's like regular engines do. That is how they are supposed to run.

  • Ducted fan engines can handle lots of rpm, nice landing at the end, thanks for the vid...

  • Pretty cool, next time you should try a turbine engine and maybe use some powerful electric fans to give lift from those, but either way still cool, lol just be careful with that engine its revin uo way high

  • Absolutely insane!!!

I went into the video thinking it would be electric...but noooo it's nitro!!... Wholy hell...good work...

  • very very.. cool keep up the good work

  • people like you should learn to shut there mouth

  • in a big scale you could prolly build 4 separate engines dutced fan with gyrothrust. would be awsome to watch
