  • Hi DDRCCableguy, thanks for asking! We started with about 40 KG of horse dung here in Germany. We simply mixed it up with water in a slurry and filled the 500 liter container on the bottom. Then we placed the inverted 300 liter plastic rainwater tank on top (with a hole in the bottom for the output pipe) and let it sit for a month. Once we started getting flammable gas we started adding kitchen waste only. In Egypt we build them and use cow or pig dung. Almost any dung will do to start.

  • Thanks for answering so quick, Two more questions, if you allow:

    1) With the top drum beeing the gastank and the resulting overpreasure, how do you prevent the slurry from beeing pressed out when you fill the fermenter with kitchen waste?

    2) Did you modify the stove you are using in any kind? Or is this a CNG stove?

    BTW Iam from germany too, but i heard you talking, it sounded like english origin ;-)

  • Hi DDRC, no problem. 1) when we add more feedstock we get the equivalent amount of liquid out. This is a great liquid fertilizer. The quantities each day (about 10 liters) are perfect for fertilizing our rooftop garden.

  • 2) the stove we use is the typical gas stove used in Egypt for CNG. We modify it simply by removing the pressure restrictor. Since biogas from a home digester comes in at very low pressures stoves using it simply need to have as wide a jet as possible. The same was true running the engine -- we drilled out the carburetor. It was simple. And yes, I am of American origin, married to a German and living in Germany aber Meine Deutsche ist sehr schlechte! Danke fur deine fragen!

  • Agitated about Agitation.

    Following a thread on the Digestion email-list about increasing surface area for the bacteria to sit on, I'm also thinking about agitation.

    A loose, nested 'cage' of alternating vanes, mechanically driven could increase surface area and stir things up — both of which would mean more "how-do-you-do" between the slurry and the bacteria.

    What do you think?

  • Q.  Are you getting a measurable benefit from heating it with the solar collector?

  • A few suggestions from what I've read and heard:

    1) U can use some output 'tea' to replace input water. This gives ur input a kick start and saves water. U may not want to put it in ur blender so u could just pour a bit down ur inlet - which might save u plunging!

    2) If you leave your tea output pipe open, as gas is produced, it will self regulate it's liquid level. (and save embarrassing spills!)

    3) Running the gas outlet through a simple water bubbler will scrub some CO2 and stop flashback.
