The Cliff Adams Singers were formed in 1954.
"Sing Something Simple" with the Cliff Adams Singers was BBC half-hour of non-stop pop-songs. Beginning in 1959, initially on Fridays, then on Sunday nights, where it stayed every week until 2001. The Adams Singers were originally accompanied by accordionist Jack Emblow and his quartet.
"Sing Something Simple" featured the most popular songs of the last 70 years, performed by singers (4 female, 12 male).

Liza Minnelli - Cabaret
-------
What good is sitting alone
In your room?
Come hear the music play.
Life is a Cabaret, old chum,
Come to the Cabaret.

Put down the knitting,
The book and the broom.
Time for a holiday.
Life is a Cabaret, old chum,
Come to the Cabaret.

Come taste the wine,
COme hear the band.
Come blow a horn,
Start celebrating;
Right this way,
Your table's waiting.

No use permitting
Some prophet of doom
To wipe every smile away.
Come hear the music play.
Life is a Cabaret, old chum,
Come to the Cabaret!

I used to have a girlfriend
Known as Elsie,
With whom I shared
Four sordid rooms in Chelsea
She wasn't waht you'd call
A blushing flower...
As a matter of fact
She rented by the hour.

The day she died the neighbors
Came to snicker:
"Well, that's what comes
From too much pills and liquor."
But when I saw her laid out like a Queen,
She was the happiest... corpse...
I'd ever seen.

I think of Elsie to this very day.
I remember how she'd turn to me and say:
"What good is sitting alone
In you room?
Come hear the music play.
Life is a Cabaret, old chum,
Come to the Cabaret.

Put down the knitting,
The book and the broom.
Time for a holiday.
Life is a Cabaret, old chum,
Come to the Cabaret."

And as for me,
I made my mind up, back in Chelsea,
When I go, I'm going like Elsie.

Start by admitting,
From cradle to tomb
Isn't that a long a stay.
Life is a Cabaret, old chum,
Only a Cabarert, old chum
And I love a Cabaret.

The Best of Times (from La Cage aux Folles)
By George Hearn & Gene Barry

The best of times is now,
What's left of summer but a faded rose,
The best of times is now,
as for tomorrow,
well, who knows, who knows, who knows.

So hold this moment fast,
and live and love as hard as you know how,
and make this moment last,
because the best of times is now, is now, is now.

Now, not some forgotten yesterday,
now, tomorrow is too far away.
So hold this moment fast,
and live and love as hard as you know how,
and make this moment last,
because the best of times is now
is now, is now, is now, is now...

(reprise)
The best of times is now,
What's left of summer but a faded rose,
The best of times is now,
as for tomorrow,
well, who knows, who knows, who knows.

So hold this moment fast,
and live and love as hard as you know how,
and make this moment last,
because the best of times is now, is now, is now.....

  • We used to have a tin bath :-)

  • ...and I totally agree with silverdalesaphires

  • I remember this show in the 80s, sat in my grans dining room, the amber sunshine glowing through the autumn trees into the room, like a soft haze, dreamy, ill never forget it... the beautiful haunting voices singing away, perfect times..... Perfect.

  • Memories of 60's childhood and once the hit parde was finished, me and my brother would share a bath, as it was school in the morning, have a cup of ovaltine then bed.

  • Thank You for posting this and thank YouTube.

  • Now, when I was young, this was influential in my learning how awful being middle of the road is - mouthing the familiar like a robot to kill any thoughts of being inspirational. You start your life with 'two-twos are four' when you are six and finish with 'sing something simple' when you are sixty. Well, that is my experience, but good luck and good repetition of your life if you enjoy it.

  • @SteveGad

I listened to this most Sunday's when my father would drive me home in his Zodiac to take me back to the Children's Home in Norwood, S London. We could always 'sing along to all those songs we know so well'.

  • The only reason I remember this is because as a child I used to catch the end of the show on Radio 2 when I tuned in to listen to the Top 40 Chart show because Radio 1 used to broadcast the Top 40 Chart Show on the Radio 2 FM stereo frequency before Radio 1 had its own FM frequency, Every sunday at 5 to 5 for years I heard "Sing Something Simple" Before Bruno Brookes!

  • The likes of Cowell and Co are merely trying to feed the monster they've created that demands constant 'disposable gratification.' Very few of his creations can either hit or hold a note, let alone read music; it's simply enough for them to mime to a backing track that's been enhanced out of all proportion to its true musical worth. Emblow and the Adams Singers are true 'professionals', versatile and memorable. Who will remember the 'EX' factor in 50 years? Thought so!

  • I am 60 and love listening to this show.....i have a couple of the old radio episodes which i play over and over. It takes me back to the early 1960's when i used to stay with my grandparents. Granny's chair was next to this huge radio with all kinds of coloured lights....i was only about 9 or 10 but still loved the show....also 'Time for Old Time.' Anybody got any recordings of SSS out there? David.
