This was the 20th Anniversary Concert and Royal Court of the New Orleans Gospel Soul Children. The choir was under the direction of Veronica Downs-Dorsey.

This is one of the choir's traditional anthems: Let Mt Zion Rejoice. Sis. Katrina Pelrean and Bro. Adolf Perkins sing the soprano and tenor solos respectively.

  • Why cant we find singing like this anymore. Anthems.Anthems. Anthems. Pure scripture (PSALMS) to music, and black folk singing it. I even hear the words. Always proud of NOGSC. I miss the days, and will remember the folk always. Remember when Ebby Cummings did the lead on this one????

  • Darren I agree with you 100% God bless you for your comment. I'm a Baptist and we sings Negro Spiritauls, Anthems, Gospel selections, and Hymns from the old Baptist hymnal every Sunday.

  • @akaleighviolet That's because all the Choirs of Concord Baptist Church were Combined. Concord were known for singing Anthems. You can still hear great anthems at Convent Avenue Baptist Church in Harlem. Their Sanctuary Choir sings Anthems and Spirituals with great Harmony. Their Young adult Choir (Inspirational Ensemble) also sings anthems as well.

  • Wow...my sister takes the wrong folder with her to Connecticut, I have to play this song tomorrow ...perfection is a musty!!! Thank God I found it!!! Oh thank God for tdavidray...LOL..

  • Albert Hadley, Edwin Hogan, and Sammy Berfect were leading church and jazz/gospel (as well as classically trained) musicians in New Orleans and there is just too little written about their musical legacies...it's a shame. So many people there were influenced by their playing and arrangements of gospel music especially. I'd really like to have some great pix, and memories shared about these amazingly talented guys.

  • I love Albert and all the wonderful performances from that amazing time in my life. Now, I think Edwin B. Hogan taught Albert and Curtis at McDonough 357/or elsewhere... if not mistaken...does anyone have any info on Hogan's musical legacy in New Orleans. Photos? He was classically trained by played gospel and worked with the symphony there. I'd love to get some info on him and also whether he was indeed related to Moses Hogan.

  • That girls name, with the big afro someone mentioned, is JoAnne Crayton...a really wonderful singer I enjoyed very much. I knew Albert and several of the group. The boys name was Peter that died during a picnic accident. I know Curtis Barber (now also deceased) Albert, and several others from that era.

  • I miss singing songs like this in church, this almost had me all choked up! Lol

  • LET MOUNT ZION REJOICE! THE CHURCH OF GOD IS ALIVE AND WELL SHE IS PURE, AND HOLY SALVATION MAKES YOU A MEMBER AND SIN PUTS YOU OUT.

  • THIS IS ONE OF THE CHURCH OF GOD ANTHEMS! I LOVE THIS SONG!

  • It is soootrue...Concord Baptist Church Brooklyn was one place we could hear all of the beautiful anthems...no more...progress? God is the same yesterdy, today and forever; so is the music that is our 'balm in Gilead'...
