In 1994, 20-year-old HSIEH started out with a pizza delivery company where he learnt the value of making people happy. He is now the CEO of online retailer Zappos. Besides raising the company's sales from US$1.6M to US$1 billion, he does great things such as offering new employees, trained 4 weeks at full salary, US$2,000 to leave the company. This is to assure that people work for passion and not money. His business mottos include "be adventurous, creative and open-minded" and "create fun and a little weirdness."

Tony HSIEH shares his views on happiness and business.Prior to joining Zappos, HSIEH co-founded internet advertising network LinkExchange. It was fun at first and HSIEH enjoyed seeing it grew from a company with 10 odd employees to one with over 100. He did not pay attention to company culture then. It ended by becoming a not fun place. He was not motivated anymore and sold the company to Microsoft.After selling LinkExchange, HSIEH invested in online clothing company Zappos among others. He joined Zappos eventually, and because it was so fun, he ended up working full time there.Zappos focuses on the 3Cs: clothing, customer service and company culture. Zappos uses what could have been used for marketing to enhance customer service. For example, it offers free shipping both ways, 365 days return policy, etc. While the cost of customer service may be high, the return is equally high on customer loyalty and word of mouth advertising.Zappos also believes in vision, passion and the sense of purpose. Being part of something bigger than oneself is the longest lasting type of happiness. That is what HSIEH hopes everyone to experience at Zappos. The company has 10 core values, and these form the basis of every hire and fire. HSIEH believes that a company is better if it can inspire in addition to motivating employees. Personal and professional growth is the best way to retain employees.HSIEH believes that great companies have one thing in common -- they are able to combine profit, pleasure and purpose. Companies that have a higher purpose tend to perform better and do well. That applies to people too.

  • I happened to read an article about Zappos and how the CEO, Tony Hsieh set up this company with bring more happiness to employee and customers...Think out of the box and they actually did it quite well.
