Wow! I'm going to have to look into more of this guy's stuff. I agree with positive reinforcement. It's the only thing that's worked for me in making changes in my life. I used this video on my blog today (TheSkinnyOnline) to help me make my point about focusing on our talents not our failings. Thanks!
Sensationalist nonesense! The grade parents should spend most time on IS the F in algebra, not because of any perverted desire to obsess over a child's flaws but because this particular flaw (an F in primary or secondary education algebra) is particularly problematic.
If and when specialisation is chosen, one would very rightly focus on their strengths and ignore their weaknesses in quantum mechanics or figure skating, but until then, maths are in the curiculum for a reason and F is a problem!
Your first two words are sad. The rest are wrong. Over and over and over again research has shown that weaknesses are resolved by focussing on strengths. When we focus on weaknesses in education or child raising we make them worse, or kill the motivation to resolve them. No one has advocated ignoring the 'F' - but Marcus asked a question about focus and where one should invest time to resolve the problem.
I would be very interested to see a single piece of research that illustrates how a weakness akin to an F in maths can be resolved by focusing on A grades in English or Social Studies.
And understand that none of what I am saying contradicts the more general "strengths" approach - in fact I am an ardent advocate of most of its principles. I just think that taken to the extreme of suggesting an F in primary school algebra should not be a parent's primary concern is, simply put, nonesense.
Marcus is wonderful to watch and listen to. He's changed the way I think about how to live my life. Same goes for how I think about educating my children after reading Jenifer Fox's book YOUR CHILD'S STRENGTHS. I agree with franellen - that book is amazing!
I'm so impressed with this whole Strengths Movement. Both Marcus and now Jenifer have opened my eyes to a new way of thinking about learning and living my life. Saw Jenifer's book and had to have it. It is so well written - not at all dry or hard to read. I agree with franellen - you should get YOUR CHILD'S STRENGTHS.
Wow. Loved watching Marcus' video. He has alot to say about strengths. HOWEVER, another person -- JENIFER FOX -- has alot to say about finding the strengths in children. It all starts there, doesn't it???? Her book YOUR CHILD'S STRENGTHS is amazing.
