If you were hooking up but losing them it could have been the hooks. Some hooks hold fish much better than others. If others around you were hooking up but not you, it was probably your presentation was a little off.

r u using a centerpin reel? and if so whats the differance between that and a fly reel?

Yes its a CP reel. Usually a cp has a larger drum diameter from 4" to 5", will free spool line off the reel easier and has no drag. They are a very basic design.
