Host Jonathan Kim (Huffington Post, What the Flick) talks with Karman Mak (assistant principle at the Triumph Charter Academy) about charter schools, teachers unions, and whether the documentary 'The Lottery' does a better job of portraying charter schools and teachers unions than 'Waiting for Superman'.

  • The data are in and the charter school movement is a failure. Charter schools perform no better than regular schools.

  • huh hi miss mac my vice princibal

  • The editing of this video is pretty concerning, can't help but wonder what she was saying that was being cut out every ten seconds

  • lol thats my vice princible Gooo!Ms.Mak

  • it looks like you guys edited the shit out of her talking. You can see the screen jump at like every third word.

  • I find it hard that anyone could see "Waiting for Superman" as anything other than propaganda. Privatizing education is just another means of keeping poor people poor.

Unions aren't perfect, but understand they are just a reaction to a greater problem which is an attitude among policy makers who view workers as interchangeable and dispensable pieces of a machine and not as people. Address that issue, unions will be obsolete, then we may see a system that cares about the students.

  • She says she wants creativity but then a minute later wants to monitor them like casino gamblers and micromanage them. Also, what is with the choppy editing? Censoring or just lazy production?

  • thing people tend to forget is that unions arent there to serve the interest of students; theyre there to protect teachers as employees. what they do really has 0 to do with helping students succeed. as for telling you not to work late; its more about not wanting you to undervalue yourself by working above what youre compensated for--theyre there to look out for you as an employee, not improve your performance or that of your students.

  • Something really needs to be done about schools, in California in particular as the politicians are going to make some $1 billion in cuts statewide, and of course, the politicians and rich and powerful aren't getting hit. But the middle class is getting hit from all over.
