Just setup my Mtb to a 1x9 using a part called a 'Jump Stop' from N-Gear.

For general Mtb trail riding, you will use the middle ring about 90% of the time. Why not safe a few grams and remove the front derailleur and shifter and make a 1x9 ! Take off the large chain ring and replace with a lightweight bash guard.

  • I did the same thing, but 1x8(32x11-32). The big ring I got rid of because I NEVER use it. the granny ring turned out to be the source of my climbing problems. No matter how much I waited the front and try to pedal smooth, I could not get the front end to stop wondering. this was also on a bike with a 110mm stem at the time. Or maybe it was just me.

  • @blackdubsociety, I'm running a 32x11-34, may go to 11-36 for climbing steeper stuff. I'm now running a MRP Lopes SL Chain Guide. Works pretty well, I think it was made for downhiller though... One negative is that I can't run a bash guard when running the lopes chainguide.

  • You mean the asian guy on that show? I'll take that as a compliment.....lol Another guy said I look like the asian guy in the last Star Trek movie....lol

  • Hey Liv, you need to remove the chain, there is an area of the chain where you can take it apart. There are a few different types, but it is easy to do.

I would suggest that you keep the middle ring for a 1x9 setup as there is too much 'spinning' if you just had the smallest ring up front.

  • @liv4powder112 if you just remove the outer sprockets the chain will come off as the rear derailleur pulls from side to side

  • you have a nice bike. and good video

  • you look and sound like the guy in mythbusters xD

  • Hi, i was wondering how u removed your front derailleur. Did u have to seperate the chain or is there another way to get it off? Also, I was thinking about setting this up on my bike but on the smallest ring in the front. Would this work? Could I simply remove the 2 outer sprockets and ride it like that? Thanks a bunch.
