  • Menuhin between 15-16 years of age when this was recorded. Further proof that he was the greatest violin prodigy since the beginning of recorded sound.

I had the distinct pleasure of playing sonatas and chamber music with Artur Balsam (Menuhin's accompanist on this recording) at the Kneisel Hall Festival in Blue Hill, Maine. He told me that Menuhin was "incomparable". How right he was.

  • better, worse...this terms dont apply to artists like them ! Does Monet paint better as Van Gogh?Shakespeare or Moliere? They are all unique and comments should be disabled for all this people...

Hi Paul, remember your pal from Menuhin school, volker? Look into youtube, hope to hear from you

  • The descending 3rds from 2:02-2:07 are from another world--as if played on a single string. You can barely hear the shifts as he changes strings. Compare this to ANYONE else. Not to mention how easy he makes it all seem--even at such a tempo. And such intonation!

Perlman is right--this performance has probably left more jaws open, (and maybe produced a bit of jealosy?) among elite violinists than any other.

    Untouchable.

  • His bowing is like VELVET! No edge whatsoever and so colourful. Impossibly good playing. One of the very best renditions of this piece there is. What a talent, young Menuhin!

Hi there... and I had the privilage of playing with YM the last ten years of his career, I was his last pianist would be nice to exchange thoughts ! Paul Coker

  • 2:10-2:15 ouch!

  • @AlexanderWung Difference between Heifetz and Menuhin: Speed and metallic sound... according to many, Heifetz tone was not as beautiful as others, like Kreisler ,Menuhin, or Oistrach... Menuhin goes straight to your heart in the middle section...That vibrato was unique...He lost it later...

  • @prayformercy4 I wouldn't say he lied--probably just an honest mixup. :) I prefer Vengerov's rendition of this piece to Perlman's, anyways.

  • Yes, dangerous because of his influene. Add Galamian and DeLay - a recipe for disaster.

  • Better tone than either.
