"You'll never find another man like Mance", that's the title of the lp you see in the righthand corner and how true that is.
Born April 9th, 1895 near Navasota Texas, Mance Lipscomb died on January 30th, 1976. Most of those 80 years were spent as a sharecropper on those rich bottom lands near the Brazos River.
In 1960 Chris Strachwitz, owner of Arhoolie Records, and Mack McCormick found Mance and recorded his first lp, 6 more would follow.
Mance was an excellent guitar player, fingerpicking a mix of blues, rags and other traditional and popular styles.
His best work on cd is still available on the Arhoolie label (cd398 is his best I think).
Les Blank's fine film "A Well Spent Life" features Mance playing music and talking about his life and culture. These images show that he's not only a great musician but a wise and dignified man.
On the Stefan Grossman Guitar Workshop site you'll find several dvd's about Mance, performances as well a lessons.
Ernie Hawkins teaches this song as well on his dvd about Mance.
It's in the key of C.
I'm playing an old mahogany Supertone.
