City Series III
Andrew Quinn, October 2005
colour, silent, 4'30" approx

The footage of a zebra crossing in Hull city centre is overlaid, negative image over positive image, with a slight time delay. Everything which is identical between the time offset is turned into a neutral mid-tone grey. Everything which moves is traced both in positive and negative. Basically, anything which stops or is static will disappear into the background, so only movement can be seen as its surroundings are effectively deleted.

  • That is such a damn cool effect, how did you do that?

  • Cheers for the question. Basically, two video tracks on top of each other, with one of them in negative, half a second behind and at 50% transparency. Anything which is unchanged between the two will be a "flat grey" colour. Any differences will show up as positive or negative images.
