Popper's Requiem for Three Cellos and Piano, op. 66 was written for and dedicated to one of the cellist-composer's first publishers and good friend, Daniel Rahter. At Rahter's memorial in 1892 the Requiem was performed, and Popper read an original poem:
Tears, that turned to music,
By true friendship glorified,
Love that can never end,
Through devotion sanctified.
Take this offering so small
To your weary breast,
Take this song of sorrow,
Consolation, and sweet rest.
Following David Popper's death in 1913, a memorial concert was organized in his honor, at which, once again, his Requiem was performed by several of his students.
