@lydia12693 What's your ISO? higher ISOs mean that your camera is more sensitive to the light that does get through. That means that your pictures will be brighter.
It also means they will have more noise though, so you generally want the lowest ISO that you are can get away with.

I understand this stuff, but I still seem to be having a problem with slow shutter speed? I will use aperature priority and set the widest aperature I can, but I still am getting a slow shutter speed? I shoot with a D90 and even with the assistance of a flash, making the image very brightly lit, why I am having problems with a slow shutter speed?

A mode is king!!
If you want more DoF but the shutter speed is too slow causing blur then bump up your ISO a touch which will thereby increas the shutter speed to maintain exposure. Its a tightrope but in A mode, I personally think gives the best round of options. ;)
