The Miamisburg Wind Symphony performing my first composition, "A Fantasy: On Eagles' Wings." It was over six months in the making, and I'm so glad it worked out as well as it did.
The original hymn, "On Eagles' Wings," has been a very special work for me, and I was blessed to have Rev. Michael Joncas give me permission to write this piece based on his hymn. The first time I ever sang this song was when I was in the Cincinnati Boychoir. We used it in our wedding repetoire, and because of this I thought of this song as a very uplifting, joyous hymn.
As life progressed, I forgot about the work until I started to hear it in the setting it was intended for: funerals. the hymn took on a whole new meaning, and it inspired me to write my piece. The fantasy mirrors how the hymn appeared in my life, and it was written at about the same length as a standard hymn would be.
The work is divided into three distinct sections:
1. The introduction representing the weddings and happy-go-lucky time early in life.
2. The minor section is more somber ans more sparsely orchestrated for an isolated, depressing motif.
3. The second section transitions into the final section combining elements of both of the first parts. The original melody is played over the relative minor chords of the key, and this is layered with soaring woodwind lines. This leads to a key change a final recapitulation of the melody.
The overall theme of this work is that for everyone there is music that reaches people no matter where they are emotionally. For me, it is this hymn, and I hope you enjoy my very first composition.
Dear Sean,
I'm finally back from teaching in Rome and was trolling through You Tube to discover this performance of your fantasy. It really is quite wonderful; no matter what mistakes the performers made, one can still hear a genuine musical intelligence at work in the the three distinct sections and in the luscious treatment of timbres. Congratulations. I hope this is just the first of many compositions!
