A paean to the humble but mighty Slant Six Valiant, in 60's ad art style. Legend has it that the Slant Six engine was a venerable mid-bore six cylinder truck and tractor engine redesigned to fit under the new lower profile car hoods of the mid 50s. That diagonal slice of retro tech was often combined with a state of the art pushbutton transmission. Paradoxically, both old-tech and new usually worked brilliantly and the Valiant and its twin cousin, the Dodge Dart, were among the most reliable cars made between the early 60s and mid 70s.

  • Truck Engine? Pfffft. First time I've ever heard that.

It was designed from the get-go as an economy passenger car engine, laid over 30 degrees so the new economy small car (the Q-Series Valiant) could have a low bonnet (hood) line, and originally had a capacity of 170 cubic inches.

The AT-2 truck variant came in the later 225 RG block.

    (HyperPak Owner,...) :-)

  • @PiDsPagePrototypes -- Interesting. I had read in several places that the engine was a redesign of an existing (full upright) truck/tractor engine, but obviously substantially redesigned and slanted to fit under the hood of then-modern low profile sedans. I'll see if I can't get more info. Thanks for the input!

Oh yeah... you couldn't tell me jack when I was young. LOL I was actually pretty wised up by the time I had the Valiant -- in fact, that's WHY I had the valiant. I'd had fun, quirky cars before... and they were ultimately a huge pain in the neck. Or someplace. LOL

  • @onebluenine Well we all do extra stuff when we are young and carefree ha ha.Thanks good to know you like valiants....paul
