@Merely He's wearing makeup to make his stage performance more effective. The camera is much closer to his face than anyone in the audience would be.

Thank you so much for posting this. My grandmother would sing me to sleep with this song as did my mother. Both are gone now but this song remains. I sang to my children and now my grandchildren; and I still cry at the end. Oh thank you for all the memories you brought back.
