  • Most of the flaws in the movie--I felt--are like you said. Direction was attempting the ambiance of transcendentalism that the book achieved, the pseudo-bildungsroman while the protagonist remains largely wide-eyed and innocent. This is one of the limits of the medium--the book achieved this. The movie did not. As for the likability of the protagonist--even critics of the book found Oskar to be largely untranslatable and overbearing.

  • @Normeiskey Very interesting comment, thank you!

  • I have only seen the trailer, but I find the young boy tends to over pronounciate his lines and words. It really annoys me to the point where I dont think I will watch the movie. Do you agree? There is something "off" about the way he speaks. It's sounds very force fed and too mature for his age.

  • @gregory188 The boy is supposed to be sorta autistic/sauvant, I believe... but yeah to me it just translated as unsympathetic and annoying.

  • Somehow when you dislike a film that I like, it doesn't bother me. However when John does it...well that's a whole other thing. LOL Loved the review. .

  • @twojewsonfilm We almost always agree Joan, so yeah it's ok when we don't...! Husbands are a different matter entirely!!!

  • I don't believe Extremely Loud and incredibly close actually took the place of any other film that was to be nominated because of the way they set up the nominees so there doesn't have to be 10... there are only 9 nominees and if the academy wanted they could have picked an extra one or left Extremely loud and incredibly close out of the running

  • @GabnDad a totally different matter! Have a great weekend.

  • @zor0825 Haha - in the cineplex food court!

  • Nice review once again.

  • The trailer looked really maudlin and "gooey" (for lack of a better word.) Movies based on best-selling movies just get my guard up. Plus I'm so tired of 9/11 being used for kneejerk sentimentality. In the trailer, the kid looks like one of those Hollywood "kids," prescient, wise, yet innocent in a really contrived way.
