A woman has given birth to conjoined twins by Caesarean section.

Laura Williams, 18, from Shrewsbury, Shropshire, gave birth to the girls, named Faith and Hope, at University College Hospital, London.

They are believed to be joined from their breastbone to their navel but have separate hearts.

A family spokesman said things were looking "fairly positive" for the girls, who have since been moved to London's Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Conjoined twins are rare and figures range from one in about every 200,000 births to one in about 400,000 live births. --bbc.co.uk

  • Why were they separated so early? Seems if they would have let them grow for a while and grow strong before such a hard surgery? :/

  • No its not. She was married, in a good relationship. 100 years ago it was common practise to get married as early as 16, and the woman to have a baby.

  • Why are people so mean about this? I think the doctors were wrong to advise abortion; conjoined twins like this have often been separated with success. Is it ever better for babies to suffer an abortion instead of going through surgery while being loved and cared for by their parents?

  • i watched this on tv a while ago... i almost cried at the end :/

  • @pinkbutterflies2012 When theyre that young they have a better chance of healing fully... that's why there's even been instances where doctors operate on babies still in the womb.

And also why chicken pox in kids isn't threatening, but in adults it's much more serious and leaves bad scars behind.

They were seperated so early because that would give them the best chance at developing normally. If they waited, the babies could develop dependant on each other, making seperation harder

  • @godsfiddler Ver often they were as they wanted to be sure that they could have babies and in that way let the familytree grow.

  • I agree with the below comment.....i think i would have waited a while or a year if there wasnt any health reason to seperate earlier. rip

  • @sweetlaura27 Yeah, but they weren't pregnant when they got married 100 years ago...
