Some of it was just a simple double clicking on the background color to set it as the background color.
For others I made later in the game, Copies of the heroes, I just took a frame of animation, cut it, pasted it into a already working background sprite with similar colors and then saved it all in paint.
As for the actual battle sprites.... They worked at first shot.
